Is camp coed?
Each week of camp is coeducational, however during the Field Player and Elite sessions, girls and boys are trained separately. In all sessions, instructional groups are organized on the basis of age and skill level. Our staff features male and female coaches and counselors from around the globe who are trained to provide each camper with maximum safety, supervision, and soccer instruction. And as always, male and female campers are housed separately.

Does NSC provide transportation for my child to and from camp?
Parents are responsible for transportation to and from camp. We cannot release names of other campers traveling from your area. We do, however, offer transportation for resident campers to and from SeaTac Airport, and train and bus stations in the greater Seattle area. The fee is $50 one way or $75 for round trip. Please email or call the office to make arrangements.
Whenever possible, provide two to three weeks' advance notice.  Teams or other larger groups may need to use a service such as Shuttle Express, 1-800-487-7433.

What if we will be arriving late?
Late arrivals are easily accommodated. To prearrange a late arrival, call the office at 425-644-0470.  If calling on opening day, please call 206-963-9047 (Cliff's cell phone) to let us know when you will be arriving. If you reach voicemail, please leave the first and last names of all campers traveling with you and your approximate arrival time. Messages are checked 7 days a week and around the clock on check-in and closing days.  NOTE:  Traffic delays and/or other emergencies should not cause undue stress.  Call Cliff and all will be well!

    What time is camp over?
Parents are invited to an awards ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on closing day.  Camp closes promptly at 11:30 a.m., with checkout and departure by 12 noon when all facilities close. We appreciate your timeliness, as our staff does not stay on site during the weekend. We cannot accommodate campers through the weekend. Parents will need to make weekend arrangements for multiple-week campers prior to their arrival at camp.  Short Week camp concludes on Wednesday, July 4.

How can I send mail or a "care" package to my child while he/she is at camp?
Please address the mail as follows:
    Your child's name
    c/o Northwest Soccer Camp
    TBA

    and post it by
Monday or Tuesday to ensure adequate time for delivery.

What if my child's team would like to come to camp together?
Members of teams attending camp together may be placed in different instruction groups due to skill level, or they can be trained and lodged together with our Specialized Team Training at Northwest Soccer Camp.

Special requirements for teams desiring to train and room together: All registration forms must be provided with a team roster (including positions) and instructions stating that you would like the team to be trained and lodged together.  Also please indicate if coaches will be visiting to observe training sessions. (Coaches are welcome to observe their teams; however, meals and lodging must be arranged separately. Occasionally, accommodations may be available at camp.  In addition, there are many wonderful facilities nearby.)

"Team Discounts," of $50.00 per player, are available for teams of 12 or more players that are required to register as a group one of three ways: 1) Registration forms, a team roster and deposits are collected and mailed together. 2) A team roster is sent to the NSC office and each member registers online.  When 12 or more have signed up, the coach calls/emails NSC and confirms registrations at which time discounts are applied. 3) The coach registers the entire team under his/her account name, paying all deposits.  Parent information is captured on the bottom of the electronic registration. The coach notifies the NSC office when this has been completed at which time all discounts are applied.  The remaining balance may be paid by coach or parents.

What if my child wets the bed while at camp?
Our bed-wetting management program is designed to reduce, if not eliminate, any embarrassment or awkwardness when incidents occur. First, we endeavor to complement the policy in force at home. (Example, if the child is roused at certain times we will follow the same schedule; if allowed to "sleep through" we will conform as well). If a bed-wetting incident occurs, the measures we take the following morning are designed to correct the problem (soiled sleeping gear and clothing). Here's how it works:

    • Wake up call for everybody.
    • Clean up and bed straightening for all. Camper has been told in advance by parents and counselor - in private - to simply straighten his/her sleeping bag and leave soiled sleeping garments in sleeping bag.
    • All campers depart dorms for morning activities.  (If comfortable, the child informs counselor in private that sleeping bag and garments have been soiled.)
    • Once the dorms are empty, counselors check beds for soiled sleeping apparel. Soiled items are taken to the camp laundry where all items are washed and tumble-dried and returned to the appropriate bed.
    • Camper returns to clean, fresh-smelling bunk.
    • ALL IS WELL … AND DRY!!! No one is any the wiser and the camper avoids any embarrassment.

This is our policy and we make every effort to see that it works.

What if my child becomes homesick?
We do not encourage campers to call home unless specific arrangements are made in advance. Telephone availability is limited, and if your child is "homesick," calling home at the first sign of homesickness usually compounds the problem. We have an outstanding staff, many of whom are parents and teachers, and the supportive atmosphere in our camp usually brings children through this difficult experience with flying colors. "Homesick" campers that "make it" through the week overcome an important hurdle and get both personal affirmation and praise from the staff. It can be a very positive and esteem-building experience. Finally, we encourage all parents to restrict the use of cell phones during camp sessions!

What do I do if there is an emergency?
In the event of a family emergency while your child is at camp, you may contact Cliff McCrath at 206-963-9047 (cell). Please use this number only for emergency situations.
In the event of a camp emergency, you will be contacted according to the phone numbers you provide during registration. Please review your online account information to ensure that these numbers are accurate.  If contact info changes while your child is at camp, please update us immediately at 425-644-0470 or info@nwsoccer.org.

    Health and Safety Issues

Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) coverage is provided 24 hours a day, and full hospital and medical assistance is only minutes away.
Possession and use of illegal drugs, alcoholic beverages, tobacco and weapons of any kind by campers is strictly forbidden.  Such behavior is grounds for immediate dismissal from camp without refund or credit and at the camper's expense.

    • Do I have to fill out health forms and show proof of health care insurance?  Health and insurance information is provided on the registration form.  It must be completed and signed before your child can attend camp. Please ensure you include this information on your registration form. Complete the “Authorization to Administer Medication” portion of the form to allow the Head Athletic Trainer to administer specific pain medication (e.g., Tylenol, Advil, etc.) to your child, if needed.
    • Can my child take his/her regular medications while at camp?  Yes, your child can take his/her regular medications on the same schedule that he/she does at home. Please check in ALL over-the-counter and prescribed medications (including aspirin, Tylenol, etc.) with our trainers at the registration table. Include written instructions and label all medications with your child's name.
If your child has any special medical conditions, including food allergies, please include details during the registration process and alert staff members upon check in.
    • What about special diet requests?  All meals are provided by Bastyr University Dining Services under the direction of expert chefs skilled at creating tasty homemade soups, breads and healthy Whole Food entrees.  Bastyr chefs use the highest quality ingredients, including organic whenever possible.  Most special needs can be accommodated with advance notice; such options include vegetarian, lactose intolerant, wheat free, and nut allergy.  Please note that every effort is made to avoid cross contamination, but the Bastyr University kitchen and the equipment are not absolutely wheat free and nut free. We regret that refunds cannot be provided for those who opt out of the meal plan.

    Cell Phone Policy

Campers are encouraged NOT to bring cell phones to camp. If a camper brings a cell phone to camp, it will be collected on Sunday and returned at the end of camp. If campers need to make a phone call, they are instructed to contact their counselor or coach.  We highly recommend campers leave cell phones at home for the following reasons:

    • Cell phones detract from the camp experience, taking away from valuable training and social interaction.
    • Cell phone usage can be disruptive and problematic if unsupervised.
    • Roaming service can be a problem.
    • We cannot be responsible for lost or stolen cell phones not turned in to staff on Sunday.

How does the camp store work?
Camp store offers a variety of snack foods and beverages, as well as soccer apparel and other child-appropriate items. It is recommended that campers NOT keep money in the cottages, as these are not locked when campers are on the field, and Northwest Soccer Camp cannot be responsible for lost or stolen cash.  Deposits may be made online or at check-in (no Canadian currency please). The average deposit is $20-25 for one week of camp.  Campers can then draw on their account throughout the week. Please instruct your child concerning purchase and limits on spending.  Camp store policy limits daily purchases to avoid excessive buying. Larger purchases (e.g., sweatshirts, NSC T-shirts, etc.) are recommended on opening and closing days when parents are present (bank cards are accepted for nonfood items).
All profits from the sale of goods are credited to our needy camper fund. Campers may also bring snacks from home.

Parents: Deposits made by cash or check/echeck are refunded in cash.  Please pick up any cash refund at the Camp Store prior to leaving on closing day.  Uncollected cash refunds are credited to NSC's needy camper fund. Unspent funds deposited by credit/debit card will be refunded to the same card in the office the week following camp.

What other activities are there at camp?
In addition to our daily soccer offerings, free-time activities include many alternatives which, not surprisingly, include even more soccer options, as well as historic hikes through St. Edward Park, waterfront hikes, our ever popular arts and crafts program, soccer video tapes, and other play activities. As always, all activities are supervised.

    What about discipline?
Northwest Soccer Camp does NOT approve of corporal punishment to resolve behavior problems. Should your son or daughter choose to engage in disruptive behavior, he/she will meet quietly with members of our staff in an attempt to determine the problem and work out a solution. Usually this is sufficient to convince a child that his/her behavior is hindering others from enjoying a great camp experience. If the problem continues, a "yellow card caution" may be given and certain restrictions (e.g., loss of store privileges for a day) may be imposed.

Our goal is to create a camp atmosphere in which each person is afforded the opportunity to learn soccer and have fun. It is rare when a "red card" is given, signaling that a camper must return home before the end of camp (at the expense of the parents). We do not believe in punishing an entire floor, dorm, or team because of the inappropriate choices of a few. Group discipline is not our policy. Each situation is addressed individually under the supervision of the Camp Director, the Program Director, and the Executive Director.

What if my child leaves camp early?
Refunds or credits will not be given for "no-shows" or for those who leave camp early for any reason.

What if I need to cancel or change sessions? (See CFAR option below.)

If you must cancel, please do so as early as possible in order for us to notify those on our waiting lists.  To cancel:

    • Call our office at (425) 644-0470.  If you reach the answering machine, please leave a message including the camper’s name, parent’s name and telephone number.
    • For cancellations made 21 or more days prior to your camp session you will receive a refund less a $50 administrative fee for each camp.
    • For cancellations, for any reason, made 20 or fewer days before your camp session, you will receive a gift certificate less a $100 nonrefundable deposit.  The gift certificate can be used towards a future Northwest Soccer Camp, including the following calendar year.
    • CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) Refund.  One of the perennial problems faced by our Northwest Camper families and our administration is camp cancellation….due to injury, sickness, last minute travel conflicts and a host of other reasons.  We make every effort to make the best of such situations, but there are big-time losses on every level - and no little grief.  The camper family wants a full refund while up-front payments have to be made from the moment a camper registers until camp ends.  Our answer is: CFAR--"cancel for any reason."   During the on-line registration process, you will be asked whether you want to purchase CFAR at a cost of $24.95.  This is the ONLY time the option will be available to you.  If you purchase CFAR and need to cancel, call our office at 425-644-0470.  If you reach our answering machine, please leave a message including the camper’s name, parent’s name and telephone number.  NOTE:  The CFAR refund option applies up to camper check-in.  ONCE CHECK-IN IS COMPLETED, THE STANDARD CANCELLATION POLICY APPLIES (see above).

There is no charge to change sessions (subject to availability) provided arrangements are confirmed before the start of the initially selected session.

How will my child's skills be assessed?
Our goal is to provide each camper with as much individual instruction and attention as possible. To assist us in accomplishing this goal, every camper is given an initial assessment of soccer skills and 'game' sense in the opening session. Instruction groups are organized on the basis of age and skill level. Technical skills (passing, controlling, heading, dribbling, etc.) are evaluated by means of a skills evaluation. Soccer "sense" or "game sense" (awareness) is determined through participation in small-sided games. The result of this assessment determines the assignment for instruction groups, which begin Monday morning. We reevaluate during Monday's sessions and make any necessary adjustments.

May I observe my child while he/she is at camp?
We encourage you to accompany your son/daughter/team to camp on opening day. This will allow you to view the excellent facilities and meet our staff. You are welcome to observe your son/daughter/team while at camp. All coaches need to notify staff in advance that they will be observing and need to check in with the Camp Director upon arrival. We are unable to provide food and accommodations for you due to space limitations. Upon request, we will provide a list of local accommodations.

Will awards be presented at the end of camp?
Awards will be presented on closing day at 11:15 a.m. Parents are invited to attend. Camp closes at the conclusion of this ceremony.

Are parents allowed to watch the final games on closing day?
Absolutely.  Come early and watch final league games beginning at 9:00 a.m. Games and field sessions end promptly at 11:00 a.m. Please DRIVE SLOWLY when entering and leaving camp.

I've heard about "post-camp depression;" what is it?
Shortly after camp, perhaps the next day, a camper may appear all tuckered out and somewhat sluggish. Frequently, this is a result of shifting out of a highly organized camp schedule and returning to a more individualized home atmosphere. In addition, we keep campers pretty busy and the accompanying fatigue contributes to a "letdown." After a two- to three-day adjustment period, they should be at "full-steam" again.

Also, from a learning perspective, your son/daughter or team may not be able to reproduce all that they have learned at camp just after you pick them up. However, through the process of assimilation, the next time they join their team, a marked improvement in playing skills should be obvious.

What if my child loses something while at camp?
Please check the Lost and Found before leaving camp. If you discover later that your child left something behind, simply call us at 425-644-0470 with a description of the item.  All L&F not claimed by Labor Day will be donated to the Goodwill.

If you have any further questions or would like to contact us, please email info@nwsoccer.org or call our office at 425-644-0470.
